Brain Health and Wellness – How you can ‘Cross Train Your Brain’

Alzheimer's and other dementias have affected older adults for more than a century, but scientists have made remarkable strides in understanding how dementia affects the brain and learning how to make life better for affected individuals and families.

Internationally renowned gerontologist and geriatrician Dr. Kevin O'Neil, our Chief Medical Officer, has taken some of the most recent, breakthrough brain health research and developed a program on overall brain wellness that can help reduce the risk of Alzheimer's and other dementia.

"Many older adults have concerns about developing Alzheimer's disease or other Dementia," Dr. O'Neil said. "This is certainly a concern because advancing age is a risk factor for developing dementia. We don't currently have a cure for Alzheimer's or any type of dementia, but we are learning some things that can hopefully delay the onset and progression of the disease."

Dr. O'Neil's Cross Train Your Brain program explores the idea learned in new research that our brains are not hard-wired, instead they grow and change as we go through life. We have the opportunity to challenge our brains, to make healthy lifestyle choices that affect the functionality and overall health of our brains as well, and can even grow new cells in the brain throughout our lifetime.

Cross Train Your Brain explores all areas of personal wellness affirmations - Physical, Social, Emotional, Spiritual, Intellectual and Purposeful.

Cross Train Your Brain sessions are incorporated into Indigo Hall's robust activities and wellness program regularly, open to residents, families, and guests.

We invite you to join us for the next virtual session with Dr. O'Neil!

What is Gerontology?

Gerontology is the study of the physical, psychological, and social aspects of aging. Gerontologists look at the big picture. Where are you having some challenges? Are there things that might be missing from your life that we could help recover or restore? What can we do to help you maintain your connection to the community? Gerontologists find ways to allow and encourage the notion that aging is not that older people just take; older people can also give and still contribute to others.
